Scenarios | #1: I have been coaching in Singapore for 20-30 over years. Is there a need for me to be certified? | #2: I have gotten international recognised certification. How do I work with CoachSG to attain my Full NROC Membership? | #3: The sport that I am coaching does not have an National Sport Association (NSA) or my NSA only run the course once a year. The class is always FULL. How do I go about getting my Full NROC membership? | #4: I am only doing Sports Education Programme (SEP) as Coaching Assistant and do not intend to progress further. Are we still required to attain the Full NROC membership? | #5: My NSA requires a skills assessment as a pre-requisite for the Technical or Full Integration Course. I did not pass the skills assessment even though I am currently coaching in school. What can I do? |
What are the current arrangements by CoachSG? | Yes, even with your extensive experience, it is important to stay updated with current coaching standards. It is especially so for Coaches who want to take on coaching work / projects with government agencies such as SportSG, MOE schools etc. These stakeholders only hire NROC-registered coaches as it guarantees that Coaches meet high standards of competency, ethics, and safety. With effect from 1 July 2024, application for NROC Provisional Membership will be ceased. If you are currently holding a NROC Provisional membership, you are required to attain Full NROC membership within three years of your provisional coach registration. (i.e. this date is reflected in your NROC e-membership card at SportSync) | To attain the Full NROC membership, you are required to attain the following: #1: Valid SFA Certificate #2: Basic Sport Science (BSS) or Foundational Sports Science (FSS) certificate (exempted for NCAP Theory certificate holder) #3^: SG-Coach Level 1 (Theory) including Values & Principles in Sports, or National Coaching Accreditation Programme (NCAP) Theory certificate or its equivalent #4^: SG-Coach Level 1 (Technical) or NCAP Technical certificate or its equivalent #5: Other supporting documents ^NOTE: There are NSAs running #2, #3 & #4 as part of SG-Coach full integration / technical /. In such cases, CoachSG offers exemptions on a case-by-case basis. However, CoachSG do encourage Coaches to always plan ahead because not all NSAs or Sports Groups have sufficient resources (such as venue, trainers etc) to conduct regular courses. CoachSG is also working with Sports Groups to develop the course accordingly to SG-Coach Programme. In such cases, Coaches are strongly encouraged to obtain other required certifications while waiting for the technical course to be ready. | Coaches who are tasked to deliver SEP-endorsed programmes are required to possess the following qualifications: • A member of the National Registry of Coaches (NROC) • NCAP technical certifications and/ or other equivalent technical certifications that validates the instructor’s/ coach’s competency in teaching the sport • National Standard for Youth Sport (NSYS) or Values and Principles in Sports (VPS) • A recognised and valid Standard First Aid certification • Fulfil requirements stated in the MOE notification PA/25/20 on ‘Engagement and Registration of Instructors Offering Co-Curricular and Enrichment Activities to Schools’. How much time and cost do coaches need to invest to attain the Full NROC Membership? | The investment of time and cost depends on the sport, the level of certification required, and the availability of courses provided by the NSA. Coaches should plan for both theory and practical training as part of their certification journey. Members of the National Instructors and Coaches Association (NICA), enjoy 50% unfunded course fee support for up to $500 each year. How might NICA play a role to support the coaches? | NICA plays an important role in supporting coaches by offering training grants, resources for professional development, and connecting coaches with necessary upskilling opportunities. We also advocate for coaches facing challenges with certification processes and can assist in navigating requirements. For example, NICA provides: (a) Highly subsidised Standard First Aid (CPR+AED) Course at NTUC Learning Hub! Members pay as low as $7 for a refresher course (b) Unlock training grant! NICA is working to onboard all Level 1 NSA courses to be UTAP supported. Get a 50% reimbursement for your unfunded course fee, cap at $250 per calendar year!
